If you own a farm or ranch and are suffering lost or reduced revenue because of COVID-19, unemployment insurance benefits may help provide income during this difficult time. Although self-employed individuals don't normally qualify for unemployment, that has changed. Benefits have been extended to farmers to cover for income where farmers markets have shut down, restaurants have stopped buying, and potentially where the market for commodities has collapsed and product is being dumped, as with milk. Unemployment benefits are a useful tool in combination with the Paycheck Protection Program, and Farm Commons will discuss strategies for leveraging both.
