New Wave Urban Ag Film
In this short film, we’re taking you on a virtual road trip to visit the folks and farmers at the Prescott Farmers Market. This market serves as a great example of how a farmers market can serve as a vital hub that boosts their local food community and embraces sustainable practices. Their support of the region’s local growers is paving the way for the next generation of backyard growers and farmers and a lively farm-to-table restaurant scene.
Hear the stories of several farmers at the market who are taking small-scale farming to the next level. Their New Wave Urban farming approaches are born out of the land and water challenges they face and the deeply embedded desire to grow fresh produce for their family and community.
MEET THE SPEAKERS:
Kathleen Yetman, executive director of the Prescott Farmers Market, walks us through the market and its innovative programs that uphold the mission of supporting and expanding local agriculture, cultivating a healthy community, and increasing access to affordable local food.
Juan Aguiar Bravo & Keeton Aguiar are the husband-and-wife team behind Blooming Reed Farm. Having grown up helping his family’s farm, Aguiar Farms, Juan and Keeton decided to start their own in Paulden, Arizona, using more sustainable and regenerative farming practices, such as minimal or hand tilling. This no-till approach helps them avoid bringing up dormant weed seeds and nurtures the ecosystem underneath the roots for healthier soil and plants.
Joseph Schaffer and his family are the force behind Schaffer Farms, a small-scale farm in Paulden, Arizona that has shown that it is possible to grow enough food and feed a community with a small plot of land, smart irrigation methods, and using practices that do not disrupt the natural environment that surrounds their farm.
