Blue Watermelon Project Open House

Join the Blue Watermelon Project for an open house event on Monday, June 10 from 2-4 p.m.

This will be an opportunity for chefs, food service workers and school administrators to learn more about our initiative to help schools rethink relationships with food. We will provide information about our work and opportunities of Blue Watermelon Project to get involved in your community.

Resources and information about the following topics will be available:

- Participation in the Feeding the Future contest

The annual Feeding the Future contest challenges local students to create a school lunch menu that adheres to the restrictions of the National School Lunch Program. Teams of students will be paired with a Blue Watermelon Project chef who will provide guidance and support over a period of months. The competition will be held in January in Phoenix. A winning team of students will receive a financial scholarship from the Blue Watermelon Project.

- Assistance with school gardens

Blue Watermelon Project can connect your school with a master gardener to provide support and guidance for schools that want to start gardens. We also can offer suggestions on how teachers can incorporate gardens into curriculum across subjects.

- Taste education

Blue Watermelon Project chefs are available to provide taste education opportunities at local schools. These demonstrations can take place during instructional hours or as a part of after-school programming and may or may not involve hands-on learning opportunities for students.

- Cafeteria taste tests

In partnership with the Mollen Foundation, Blue Watermelon Project chefs can provide cafeteria taste tests at local schools. These events take place during lunch periods and are designed to introduce students to new foods and flavors, engaging students through all senses and encouraging learning through doing.

- Farm to School network in Arizona

The Farm to School network in Arizona "is an information, advocacy and networking hub for communities working to bring local food sourcing, school gardens and food and agriculture education into schools and early care and education settings." Connect with Arizona board members.

- Culinary skill education for food service workers

(Upcoming opportunity) In summer 2019, Blue Watermelon Project chefs will begin providing culinary training opportunities for food service workers. From knife skills to proper equipment use, our restaurant chefs can provide tools to help school food service workers work more efficiently and creatively.

This event is free to attend and open to the public. Please RSVP in advance.
